Influence of music in students’life is tremendous. Through various harmonious sounds, music is created by birds to human beings. Nightingale to Lata Mangeshkar (Indian Nightingale), everyone sings music.
Children at every age, are in one way or the other, connected to Music. A mother lulls a child to sleep through lullaby, poets have been known to create rhythmical music.
Looking into present scenario, Music has been proved scientifically as a great source of relaxation to our nerves. When the role of Music is considered in student’s life, it has been seen that it has tremendous effect on student’s Emotional Quotient, because music helps a student to sensitize the feelings within an individual. This is the reason the day in school is started with morning assembly where the students chant prayer that not only makes them morally upright but help them understand human values too. This also inculcates or rather imbues in the child not to discriminate with anyone and seeks the strength from Universe or The Almighty. Further the regular singing of National Anthem awakens the patriotic feelings where again the ethics of being social human is impregnated among them.
Furthermore, in Indian classrooms we follow Howard Gardners Theory of Multiple Intelligence, which equally suggests that Music which is one of the eight criteria of considering a behaviour to be Intelligent, increases Linguistic skills as well as Reasoning Skills due to the immense usage of words and their significant meaning. As rightly commented by Ludwing Van Beethoran “Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.”
Moreover students have to focus on the acoustic science as Music helps in his/her concentration and memorization. When the team of students have a control on Orchestra, the co-ordination, team spirit, Fine- motor skills, all areas find a platform in the brain development and growth of the pupil. Not only this but listening skills are also enhanced which has a huge impact on understanding lectures and day to day conversations and guidance by the elderly. Even a 2010 study published in ‘Nature Review Neuroscience’ found that,” Music education produces a modest increase in Listening Skills. Students who can listen patiently in class are better equipped to take information and master academic skills ranging from Math to Reading.”
Also, the child experiments on his own at times, which not only increases his creativity and imagination but also boosts the self-confidence.
We should also not forget that if Music can be such a remarkable source in the development of students, the negative or meaningless songs, vulgar picturization, abusive wordings can lead to immoral acts too. Some words in the songs are not Culturally and Psychologically beneficial from any side at a root level.
Therefore, looking on its more positive aspects, one cannot overrule that Music not only works as a stress buster but also has an enormous influence including emotions and personality of the student.
